ARCHIE:WECAN MAKEHISTORY

- SCOTT BURNS

ARCHIE MEEKISON wants the class of 2022 to build on Dundee United’s proud European history.

The Tannadice club are back on the continent after a 10-year absence as new boss Jack Ross prepares to take them into the Europa Conference League third qualifying round.

Excitement is growing within the club and among their supporters ahead of the draw on July 18.

Folk don’t need to look far at Tannadice to see the exploits of Jim McLean’s legendary side in the 1980s.

And Meekison, 20, said: “Europe will be massive.

“You see those past glories all over the walls at Tannadice. Guys like Paul Hegarty, Davie Bowman, John Holt and Maurice Malpas played in these games and are still involved with the club.

“It would be good if this team could make our own history in Europe and we can follow in the footsteps of some of the great United teams of the past.”

Meekison is crossing his fingers this can be his breakthrough season and he can establish himself as a regular first pick.

The talented midfielder came to the fore as he helped Tam Courts’ side finish fourth in the league.

Now he has to start again and try to impress Ross, who gave youth a shot at Hibs and St Mirren.

Meekison said: “I want to go into the new season flying. I want to play as many games as possible and try to cement a place in the team.

“I want to impress the manager and I also want to get my numbers up in terms of goals and assists.

“I really want to try to stamp my place in this Dundee United team.”

The midfielder is due a bit of luck after ligament damage on both ankles stopped him flying out of the traps last season.

Meekison added: “Last season could have been massive for me, had it not been for the injuries. I just used the time out to get fit and to look at ways where I could improve my game.

“I came back about November and it took me longer to get up to speed than I thought.

“But I managed to get through it and I finished the season strongly.

“That’s given me a lot of confidence and I want to build on that.”
