Football legend Willie is mugged for Rolex on hol

Donachie’s son in Twitter appeal over prized watch

- BY STUART MacDONALD

FORMER Scotland World Cup star Willie Donachie’s son has pleaded for help after his dad had his Rolex watch nicked in a holiday mugging. The 70-year-old, who played in the 1978 World Cup finals, was walking along a path in San Antonio, Ibiza, last Saturday afternoon when he was bundled to the ground by two men who ripped the highly treasured timepiece from his wrist. Ex-Manchester City star Willie chased the robbers and managed to catch one. But the attacker didn’t have the watch and the second man got away.

Willie’s family have launched an appeal for the return of the watch, which is one of the ex-footballer’s most prized possessions.

It was presented to him in 1991 when he was assistant manager of Oldham Athletic after he helped the club win promotion to England’s top flight.

An inscription on the back reads: “Thanks Willie for a memorable season 1990-91 OAFC.”

Glasgow-born Willie, who manages the national team on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, wore the watch every day.

His son Dan, 49, tweeted: “Please help! My 70-yearold dad mugged in Ibiza for his watch. Gifted by the Oldham Athletic board when promoted in 1991. This was his last remaining sentimental item. Help if you can.”

Dan described his dad as a “warrior” and said he had not sustained any serious injuries in the mugging.

Willie’s former Manchester City teammate Rodney Marsh was among star players from the past who shared Dan’s appeal online.

Former left-back Willie, who was brought up in Glasgow’s Castlemilk, made more than 350 appearances for Man City and also played 35 times for Scotland.
