Kids bottle bus driver
Gang terror sparks call for culprits to lose free youth travel
A BUS driver has been bottled by youths in a “reprehensible” attack.
The driver of the 61 service from Paisley’s Gallowhill to Foxbar was returning to his cab in the town centre when he was hit over the head with the glass bottle at 8.30pm on Tuesday.
He was then kicked on the back.
The terrifying ordeal only ended when a passenger rushed to the driver’s aid. His condition has not been made public.
Bus company McGill’s is supplying CCTV footage to Police Scotland to help them identify the culprits.
A McGill’s spokesperson said: “Following interaction with youths, the driver was assaulted with a glass bottle. It is also believed he was kicked in the back.
“This is a reprehensible attack and we will do everything we can to ensure justice is brought to bear.”
The attack comes just weeks after Stagecoach bus driver Keith Rollinson, 58, died after an attack at a station in Elgin, Moray, on February 2. A teen has been charged with murder.
Bus drivers’ union Unite has reported a significant rise in attacks since those aged under 22 were granted free bus travel in March 2021.
Co-ordinator Dougie Maguire said: “There is no doubt the introduction of free travel has coincided with an increase in attacks towards drivers.”
Calling for passes to be revoked from youths who offend, former justice secretary, MP Kenny MacAskill said: “This is part of a growing problem.
“Those who carry out serious assaults must be dealt with strenuously.”
Transport Scotland said: “Any abuse of frontline public transport staff will not be tolerated.”
Police Scotland was approached for comment.
