Kennedy: Title just the start

-

MICK KENNEDY insists the job is only half done after East kilbride clinched the title for the third time.

kennedy praised everyone connected with the club as they collected the silver after a 1-0 win over Berwick.

They now await the winners of the Highland League to take part in the pyramid play-offs with the winners taking on the bottom League Two side.

kilby, who last won the title in 2019, only needed a point to clinch the title but had to work hard to beat the Wee Gers who failed to score a late penalty after keeper Lyle Avci saved the spot-kick four minutes from time.

kennedy said: “Getting the league trophy was the challenge at the beginning of the season and we’ve done that.

“We wanted to get into the play-offs which we’ve done. We’ve just got to get ready for what comes in the next few weeks.

“i want to thank everyone connected with kilby on helping the club win the championship. i’m blessed to have been surrounded by so many great people.

“it’s a long time since we won the championship and i’m delighted for the players and the club and everyone connected with it.

“it was a bit nervy at the end but we got the points to win the league which was the main thing.”

in the 31st minute kilby were awarded a penalty and John Robertson stepped up and calmly slotted home.

With 20 minutes to go the Wee Gers had a great chance to level but Bayley klimionek’s effort was tipped round the post by Avci.

kennedy hailed the standin keeper and said: “i’m delighted for Lyle who saved the penalty, he came in recently when our No.1 was injured and has done well.”

kilby face the Highland League champions at k-Park on April 27 with the second leg away on May 4 and the two-legged Pyramid Play-Off Final on May 11 and 18.

Robbie McNab grabbed the winner as Cowdenbeath beat in-trouble Gretna 2-1 and bottom club Edinburgh Uni lost 4-1 at Cumbernauld Colts as Luke McCarvel wrapped it up from the spot.
