A MAN has been arrested and charged in connection with a hit-and-run that left a woman critical in hospital.

Footage of the incident, some of which is too graphic to share, shows a 63-year-old woman apparently hit by a silver car in Muirhouse Parkway in edinburgh on Sunday afternoon. The vehicle appears to drive towards the victim as she walks with another woman. The woman then lands on the car bonnet before being dragged onto a pathway. She is later seen lying on the ground as the car drives away. Another woman can be seen rushing to help. One woman trying to help the victim could be seen jumping out of the way of the car. She appears to be visibly distressed. The victim was rushed to edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment where she was said last night to be in a critical condition. Police confirmed yesterday that a 61-year-old man has been arrested over the incident. A neighbour of the victim, who asked only to be named as Julie, told the Daily Record that she had recently moved to the area after fleeing her previous home.

She said: “She was living next door to me and arrived just a couple of weeks ago after she had to leave her last home.

“She really hasn’t been here long. her family, including her daughters, visit a lot and she also has a wee granddaughter who comes around after school. They all seem like really decent people. It’s such a tragedy.”

Julie added that the victim’s sisters witnessed the horror unfold.

She said: “I saw the woman lying unconscious on the grass verge before the ambulances and police came.

“She wasn’t responding. I could see where the car’s tyres had gone up onto the grass and her two sisters were surrounding her. They were in a terrible state.”

Other eyewitness at the scene also spoke of their shock.

One said: “I heard screeching and ran out of the house and saw the woman being hit by a car. My neighbour told me to come back inside.

“The woman was unconscious and bleeding.”

Another added: “I could see the woman lying on the grass verge just before the police arrived. It was terrifying. It’s so sad and it was horrific to watch.”

Dozens of police, including forensic teams, were in the area yesterday as investigations were carried out.

A spokeswoman said: “Around 4.10pm on Sunday, April 14, we received a report of a crash involving a 63-year-old female pedestrian and a car on Muirhouse Parkway, edinburgh.

“The car left the scene before officers arrived. A 61-year-old man was later traced and arrested.”
