TRIBUTES have been paid to an Aussie rules football player who died at the weekend after a suspected heart attack on the pitch.

Kingdom Kangaroos player Ross McGhie, 25, from Leven, Fife, is understood to have suffered a cardiac arrest while his team played their first game of the season, against the Glasgow Giants, in Linlithgow on April 13. He passed away later that day. His devastated mum Morna Hill shared the news on social media and said her family has been left “heartbroken”.

She said: “This is the hardest post I have ever had to write but last night I got the phone call that every parent dreads.

“Ross, my oldest son, took unwell whilst playing the game he loved with the friends he loved. Despite the best care of the amazing doctors trying to restart his heart, Ross died. He was only 25. “We are all heartbroken.” Kingdom Kangaroos hailed Ross as a “cherished teammate”.

A Facebook post read: “The Kingdom Kangaroos are devastated at the passing of senior player Ross McGhie – a cherished teammate and friend who was beloved by all.

“Incredibly brave and talented, Ross had recently been elevated into the Roos’ leadership group, such was his high standing within the club. He was ever selfless and loved by all.

“Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.”

Ross also played for amateur sports team Glenrothes Rugby Club as a senior.

The club said: “It’s with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of one of our friends and senior players Ross McGhie. Our love and condolences go out to all his friends and family.”

Many more tributes flooded in for the young player, who was described as an “inspiration” in his local community.

William Hunter said: “Ross, you were one in a million... Truly one of the best guys I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Thanks for the memories, I will treasure them forever.”

Ross, a keen BMX rider, was a key player in bringing an indoor skatepark to Fife.

Jack Smith said: “Hope you’re shredding that skatepark in the sky brother.”

Colin McQuillen commented: “Absolutely gutted to hear about our BMX brother Ross McGhie.

“Ross, you were one of the core grafters helping to build KRISP Skatepark.

“You always had time for the other riders, helping them out, hyping everyone up, and even regularly helping an old dog like me learn some new tricks! You always brought something special.

“Despite your tough exterior, you had a gentleness and kindness about you that everyone warmed to. Just reading through all the tributes shows how much you are loved.”
