Leighton: Cup is still half-full this term

- BY SCOTT BURNS

LEIGHTON CLarksON believes lifting the scottish Cup would transform a bad season into a great one for aberdeen.

The Dons midfielder knows they face a tough task to lift silverware, starting with saturday’s semi-final clash with Celtic.

Despite reaching the Viaplay Cup Final and enjoying some good results in Europe, it has been a disappointing campaign for aberdeen and they will finish in the bottom half of the Premiership.

But Clarkson knows there is still a chance of it ending with a silver-lining and a return to European group stage football again.

The playmaker said: “We know that when we were in Europe we did really well in matches but the points maybe didn’t reflect that.

“Then again we did come up against really good sides but in the Premiership we haven’t been good enough all year.

“We are the first to admit that and we did get to the final of the Viaplay Cup and narrowly lost to rangers.

“Now we have the chance to hopefully get to another final and winning a trophy that would turn a bad season into a great one.”

aberdeen will be underdogs at the weekend against Celtic but they will be looking to bite.

Clarkson points to the fact that they have already beaten rangers at Ibrox this season and should have beaten Celtic in the last Pittodrie draw.

He said: “We should have won that (Celtic) game as we performed really well against them that day.

“Of course they are a really good team and you do have to nullify them.

“But we have gone to Ibrox and won and should have beaten Celtic at Pittodrie with the chances we had at the end.

“We go into every game knowing we can win.”
