Mental health sufferers can apply for state help

-

CAN I claim Adult Disability Payment for mental health. If so, how do I apply?

In short, yes, you can, if the mental health issue affects you in the long term.

adult Disability Payment (aDP) is administered by social security scotland and is available for scottish residents aged between 16 years old and state pension age.

the payment helps with the extra costs that come with having a longterm health condition or disability.

to be considered for aDP, you must have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability lasting 13 weeks or more and which is expected to last a further 39 weeks or more.

It’s important to know that you do not need a formal diagnosis to get aDP, but you will be asked to provide evidence or further supportive information in your application form.

aDP is made up of two parts called components – the daily living component and the mobility component – and both are paid at different rates.

Depending on your needs, you can receive one or both components.

Your income and savings are not considered when you apply, so it doesn’t matter if you are working.

You can get the daily living component if your ability to carry out day-to-day activities is limited by a physical or mental health condition or disability. activities can include things like preparing food, communicating or caring for yourself, among others.

social security scotland (sss) will assess your ability to carry out everyday activities. Based on this assessment, you may qualify for the standard rate of the daily living component, £72.65 per week for the current 2024-25 period, or the enhanced rate of £108.55 per week.

If your ability to plan and follow journeys or move around is limited by a physical or mental health condition or disability, you may be eligible for the mobility component.

sss will evaluate how well you can perform everyday activities and determine whether you qualify for the standard rate of £28.70 per week or the enhanced rate of £75.75 per week.

If you need help with an application form or need information, the welfare advisers at advice Direct scotland can guide you through the process.

the application consists of two parts. the first requires personal details such as date of birth, address, and your national Insurance number.

Part two delves into greater detail about your condition and how it impacts your ability to look after yourself. You’ll also be asked about the type of assistance and support you require, as well as any medication, treatment, or equipment needed.

Completing part two can be time consuming but you don’t have to do it all at once. You only need to provide detailed answers to relevant questions.

sss aims to reach a decision within eight to 10 weeks after receiving your completed application and any necessary supporting evidence.

If you receive aDP, you might also qualify for other financial support, such as money off your council tax, help with travel costs, or top-ups to your existing benefits.

so, it’s a good idea to check all your benefits to see what you could get.
