RESULT! Roy’s successor will have to prove their worth to FA

-

THE FA last night warned that it will not be naive when negotiating wages with the next England manager.

Chief executive Martin Glenn wants Roy Hodgson’s successor to have an incentive-based contract with financial rewards for success.

The FA chief admits mistakes were made in the past when paying wages of around £5million and £6m to Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Glenn said: “This business is more results-orientated than any other.

“So if the question is whether we are looking at an incentive-based contract then I think the answer is yes to that.

“To start off, it has to be results-orientated. I can’t say what the right salary is. You say Fabio got a fortune and Roy got a fortune but it was half the fortune that Fabio got.

“You have to look at what are the benchmark earnings for top-quality football management.

“To get a really good person when they are currently earning £4m at a club, you have to be in that zone. I think luckily we’ve got the FA finances right now. We’re in a better financial position than we’ve ever been but it doesn’t mean I want to be lax with money. “The argument against Sven and Fabio in the past was that it wasn’t benchmarked. We were just naive. “I think we will pay a benchmark salary for the right person. That’s the way to look at it and I don’t quite know what it is yet. “I know a little bit about what Joachim Low gets with Germany but it’s a little bit confused by sponsorship rights etc. “We need to be in the zone of what world champions are paying and competitively make it attractive. “We are going into the market and you’ve got to pay a market-attractive rate but no one wants to be naive.” Glenn admits that, ideally, he’d prefer an English manager to take over, which could put Sunderland’s Sam Allardyce in the frame. But Glenn said: “If you look at it, there are not too many at that top level.”
