Is new PM itching to give Larry the boot?

-

DOWNING Street moggy Larry could be in for some bad news – the Prime Minister is allergic to cats.

The Daily Star Sunday can reveal that Theresa May’s love of kitten heels is as far as her fondness for felines goes.

This week she promised that No.10’s chief mouser would be safe in his job during her time in charge of the country.

But according to sources, Mrs May has an allergy to animal fur. An insider said: “It’s only mild but she is allergic to cats and other kinds of animal fur. It could be a worrying time for Larry.”

But all is not lost. Vet Andrew Bucher said the PM can overcome the problem.

He said: “If Mrs May does have a cat allergy then there should be no worries.

“More interaction should naturally desensitise her and, if needs be, she can ask her pharmacist for hay fever capsules to help with any initial symptoms.” Larry has endured a rocky time since arriving in Downing Street in 2011.

It has long been speculated that ex-PM David Cameron was not a fan, although he used his final Prime Minister’s Questions to deny it.

But Mr Bucher, chief veterinary officer of charity MedicAnimal, warned the handover could be a distressing time for the resident cat.

He said: “The next few weeks are likely to be a challenge for Larry. “Mrs May will need to spend plenty of time playing with Larry over the next couple of weeks and, if needs be, he can go to his safe place with plenty of toys to keep him de-stressed.”

Larry has had a difficult week after seemingly being caught up in a turf war with the Foreign Office moggy Palmerston.

The cats were spotted squaring up in Downing Street and Larry later required veterinary treatment for an injured paw.
