Vic pips pal in triathlon

-

VICKY Holland beat best pal Non Stanford to bronze in the women’s triathlon.

The pair, who live together and train together, battled throughout the two-hour event.

Holland, 30, beat Stanford, 27, by just three seconds. Holland, inset, said: “I knew it would come down to me and Non, which was the worst thing ever. I wanted this to be us together and the first thing I said was, ‘I’m so sorry’.”

Stanford added: “I feel a bit mixed. Fourth is probably the worst place to come but it’s still fourth at the Olympics.” ROBIN COTTLE DOUBLE gold medal gymnastics hero Max Whitlock was on a high when he showed off his skills for this photo. The 23-year-old posed at the top of Rio’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain as he practised a dangerous routine, almost 400m up in the air. He tweeted: “Needed to get a picture like this up the top of Sugarloaf mountain.” Whitlock clinched two golds in an astonishing two-hour period, becoming Britain’s first Olympic champion in gymnastics. He was also the first Team GB Olympian to win two titles on the same day in 84 years. FRANCESCA ROBBINS THESE knitted athletes have the wool to win – as long as they don’t get a stitch.

A family who are nutty about knitting have filled their garden with woolly British athletes to celebrate the Olympics.

The display includes Mo Farah doing the Mobot, as well as the rowing team, a gymnast and a long (woolly) jumper. Samantha Chaplin, her aunt Suzanne Haggerty and nan Mary started making the bonkers characters four years ago.

Samantha said: “The Olympics only come around every four years so it should be celebrated in style.”

The family regularly whip out their needles and have knitted Roald Dahl figures, as well as characters for Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas.
