Four would-be buyers battled it out for 15 minutes in a tense auction room in California to get their hands on the 1955 D-Type. With the car liveried in the colours of the Scottish flag, Ninian Sanderson and Ron Flockhart drove more than 2,400 miles at the 24-hour race in France in 1956.
They did 300 laps at an average speed of 104mph, at one point hitting 156mph. A US collector put it up for sale at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale. The identity of the winning buyer has been kept under wraps.
Shelby Myers, the auctioneer’s car specialist, said the D-Type “has an incredible pedigree”.
