Sheikh up plea
CAMPAIGNERS have urged Man City’s owners to help end human rights abuses in the United Arab Emirates, They wrote to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan – the UAE’s deputy prime minister – asking him to use his influence. Amnesty International says human rights are “deteriorating” in the UAE, which comprises seven oil-rich states, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The organisation claims “modern slavery” is flourishing and critics of the government are unfairly tried before being given lengthy jail sentences. The letter also alleges UAE laws and policies “make women highly vulnerable to physical and sexual abuse”. Sheikh Mansour bought City in 2008 and has since pumped around £1billion into the club.
