THE 2018 World Cup begins in 648 DAYS – but for England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the battle to get there starts now.

Sam Allardyce and his Three Lions side open their campaign in the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho in Trnava against Slovakia at 7.45pm tonight.

Under Roy Hodgson, England qualified for Euro 2016 with a perfect record of 10 wins from 10 games – can Big Sam match that feat this time around?

Alongside them and tonight’s opponents in Group F are Malta, Slovenia, Lithuania and Gordon Strachan’s Scotland.

It is 18 years since the Scots qualified for a major tournament and they will look to get off to a winning start against the Maltese in the village of Ta’ Qali this evening.

Chris Coleman’s Wales were the stand-out heroes of the summer in France and they will be eager to continue their good form when they kick-off their Group D mission against Moldova in Cardiff tomorrow.

The Republic of Ireland are also in that group and Martin O’Neill’s troops begin life without Robbie Keane with a trip to Belgrade to face Serbia.

With the country’s record goalscorer no longer in their ranks, can Shane Long and Jonathan Walters step up to the plate?

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland lost just once in qualifying for Euro 2016 and will start the new campaign in Prague against the Czech Republic tonight.

Kyle Lafferty scored seven goals during their run to France and the team will hope for a similar tally from the striker again.
