RESULT! Unlucky Luke is left at home after suffering another injury setback

-

LUKE SHAW was withdrawn from the England squad yesterday to cut-short his international return.

The Manchester United left-back was recalled to the international scene having missed the previous 13 games after suffering a badly broken leg in a Champions League game in Holland against PSV Eindhoven.

He would not have started today’s match against Slovakia, with Tottenham’s Danny Rose already selected to play in that position.

But Shaw – who has been in superb form under new United boss Jose Mourinho so far this season – could well have had an involvement from the subs’ bench.

Shaw has played every minute of the Red Devils’ three Premier League games this campaign.

But the former Southampton defender was pulled out of training at St George’s Park yesterday – replaced by Arsenal’s Tafari Moore, an England Under-17s player – and did not travel with the rest of Sam Allardyce’s squad to Slovakia. Instead, he returned to United, with the FA saying they wanted to “manage” Shaw’s situation after such a serious injury.

The full-back became the second player to be withdrawn from Allardyce’s first England squad.

He followed Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who injured a hand in training.

Last night, the England boss said: “Luke is not injured but he wasn’t feeling that great this morning.

“So it’s just a precautionary measure really.”

“We made the decision just to send him back to Man Utd and not take any risks with him. “He just wasn’t feeling right.” Mourinho will now hope that Shaw recovers in time to face bitter rivals Manchester City in a top-of-the-table Premier League derby clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.
