NICK PARKINSON The Sheffield boxer is stepping up two weight divisions to take on the US-based Kazakh for his three world middleweight titles at London’s O2 Arena. Brook, 30, reckons beating Golovkin – ranked by many as boxing’s pound-for-pound No.1 – would be the greatest win by a British boxer. He has changed his diet and got on his bike during a training camp in Fuerteventura to prepare for Golovkin, who was last taken to points eight years ago and has KO’d 32 of his 35 victims. Brook said: “I’ve been getting more protein and been eating kangaroo and chicken. “My nutritionist says it’s good for energy, plus a lot of organic vegetables and fruits. I’ve not been eating junk to put the extra weight on. “I’ve always been a big welterweight so it doesn’t take much for me to put weight on but I’ve been eating clean. “Eating kangaroo puts a spring in my step. “It’s got a unique taste. It’s all right but it’s springy meat and it will make a difference. “I like my cycling now. I took my bike out to Fuerteventura and did 50 or 60 kilometres every few days. I was riding with my top off to get the sun and vitamin D as well. “I was just pedalling away and I got into deep thoughts and it works well for my endurance. “I’ve introduced cycling in the last year or so to my training. All that running is not great on the joints when you get older and cycling has less resistance. “I’ve got an altitude tent and everything is being done with science behind it. “We’re targeting strength and conditioning but not training with heavy weights, we’re just trying to move the weights back and trying to imitate the fight.” Brook reckons that beating Golovkin, 34, would make him a British boxing legend alongside the likes of Naseem Hamed, who also trained at the Ingle Gym in Sheffield before him. And IBF world welterweight champion Brook reckons if he can upset the odds it would eclipse the 1951 points win by Randy Turpin over the great Sugar Ray Robinson. He said: “I don’t think anyone in Britain has done what I’m going to do. “I don’t think it has been done before. Randy Turpin is the only one but because I’m going up from welterweight to fight the most feared fighter on the planet it’s even bigger than that. It’s debatable – but that’s my opinion. “Whatever Naz has done or any other British f i ghter recently, it will blow it out of the water. “I don’t think my feet would ever touch the floor again, to achieve such a thing. “It’s something I could tell my grandkids over and over again and not get bored of. “For me, it means everything. Legends of British boxing are people like Hatton, Lennox, Benn, Eubank, Calzaghe and it would put me with all those greats and I would be top of the pile. “I love this game because you can come from nothing and it gives everyone an opportunity. A win like this is absolutely huge.”
