SAINT JAY RUINS DAY FOR DAVE

-

DAVID MOYES must have winced when he saw Jay Rodriguez come on as a substitute for Southampton against his Sunderland side last weekend.

The striker was only sent on 16 minutes from the end of that match at St Mary’s – but it was long enough to deal a double blow to the Black Cats.

Not only did Rodriguez equalise in the 85th minute to deny Sunderland their first Premier League win of the season, he also killed off a move to the Stadium of Light.

And Moyes must have feared that would happen when a player he wanted was suddenly facing his club.

As revealed in the Daily Star Sunday a week ago, Sunderland hoped to sign the former Burnley striker, 27, before last Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

And they knew that to do so, they would have to win a battle with Hull and West Brom.

Southampton were prepared to let him go on a temporary transfer in exchange for a £2million loan fee.

But all that changed when Rodriguez, whose promising career has been interrupted by major injuries, saw a shot squirm under the body of Sunderland’s young keeper, Jordan Pickford. That prompted Saints to decide they might need Rodriguez (left) after all and they opted not to let him leave in the summer transfer window. One shot, one mistake, one goal – and one potential deal off.

And one doubly disappointed and frustrated manager in Sunderland boss Moyes. ARSENE WENGER can’t from all win. He’s urged sides to make signings. Gooners even chant, g “Spend some f***** money!” And what the happens when Arsenal boss splurges £52million on Shkodran Mustafi (right) and Lucas Perez? He’s accused of panic buying!
