RESULT! Tricky Rickie’s double helps Bluebirds soar

-

A LATE double from one-time England striker Rickie Lambert helped lift Cardiff out of the relegation zone.

Lambert struck twice in five minutes, first heading Peter Whittingham’s in-swinging cross home after 74 minutes, before then firing past Milers’ keeper Lee Camp.

The hosts had looked set for victory after Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown put them ahead on the hour from Greg Halford’s long throw.

But Alan Stubbs’ side were once again guilty of failing to see out the game as Cardiff came from behind to seal their first league away win of the season.

And, after blowing a lead for the fourth game in a row, the Millers dropped into the relegation zone.

A delighted Cardiff boss Paul Trollope said the experience of Lambert would be crucial as Cardiff look to climb the table.

“Rickie Lambert has got the respect of the dressing room because of what he has done in his career,” he said.

“He has a real hunger to play for the club and we are delighted he has got off the mark. He is a leader and we are really pleased with his contribution.”

Dejected Rotherham boss Stubbs said: “This is a tough one to take because we deserved more from the game than what we got.

“I can’t fault the players’ effort and desire.”

Rotherham dominated the first hour and finally made their pressure tell when Brown struck from Halford’s long throw-in.

Kelvin Wilson then missed a chance to add to Rotherham’s lead, heading straight at Ben Amos.

And they were made to pay when Lambert drew Cardiff level with 16 minutes left, heading in Whittingham’s free-kick

And Cardiff sealed a stunning turnaround when Lambert’s shot deflected in with 11 minutes left.
