THE NORTH EAST LINK CONTINUES

THERE’S something about the North East and the England job.

It is hardly the most successful region in the country, despite the passion shown on Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside. But the FA continues to appoint managers with connection­s to that part of the country, although not all of them were born there.

The latest is Gareth Southgate, who is in charge of England for four matches following Sam Allardyce’s departure. Southgate (below) is a former Middlesbro­ugh captain and went on to manage Boro between 2006 and 2009.

And Big Sam decided to leave Sunderland to briefly become England manager.

Allardyce was also an ex-Black Cats player and Newcastle boss.

And of the 19 men to manage England, including those in a caretaker capacity, nine have North East links.

Sir Bobby Robson and Don Revie were from the area and took charge of Newcastle and played for Sunderland respective­ly.

Kevin Keegan played for and managed Newcastle, Steve McClaren bossed Boro and Toon, while Terry Venables also had a spell coaching at Boro.

And two caretaker managers worked in the North East – Howard Wilkinson at Sunderland and Stuart Pearce, who played for the Magpies.
