Carey at the double to ruin Westley’s day

-

PLYMOUTH extended their lead at the top of League Two with a 3-1 victory at Newport to ruin Graham Westley’s first home game in charge of the bottom club.

Graham Carey twice had Argyle ahead from the penalty spot, with home goalkeeper Chris Day sent off after giving away the first spot-kick on 38 minutes. Jon Parkin brought Newport level after 50 minutes, but Jordan Slew made sure of all three points 12 minutes from time.

Carlisle moved up to second as they ran out 2-1 winners against Stevenage to make it four straight victories.

Jason Kennedy gave the Cumbrians an early lead before Matt Godden and Danny Grainger both struck from the spot.

Doncaster lost ground after they were beaten 4-2 at Blackpool, despite taking a first-minute lead through Andy Taylor’s own goal. Brad Potts (two), Kelvin Mellor and Kyle Vassell scored without reply for the hosts before Tommy Rowe’s 66th-minute consolation.

Notts County climbed into the play-off places with a 2-1 win at fifth-placed Portsmouth.

Cameron McGeehan’s late equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for fourth-placed Luton at home to Mansfield.

Accrington completed the top seven after becoming the first team to stop Crawley scoring at home this season as it finished goalless.

Like the Red Devils, Grimsby missed the chance to move into the play-off spots after they were beaten 1-0 at home by Cheltenham, thanks to Billy Waters’ ninth-minute strike. Mauro Vilhete and John Akinde struck to move Barnet out of the bottom two with a 2-0 victory at Wycombe. Exeter replaced the Bees in 23rd spot after Cambridge’s 2-1 triumph at St James’ Park left the Grecians still looking for their first home win of the season.

Leyton Orient came from behind to win 3-1 at Hartlepool with Sandro Semedo (above) and Ollie Palmer (two) on target.

Matt Dolan’s second-half strike clinched Yeovil’s fifth victory in seven games as they won 1-0 at Crewe while it finished 2-2 between Colchester and Morecambe.
