McSHANE RAINS ON KENNY PARADE

-

NORWICH: PRESTON: ROTHERHAM’S new era under Kenny Jackett began with a familiar feeling as they were beaten by Reading.

Jackett took charge of the Millers barely 24 hours after replacing Alan Stubbs, who was sacked on Wednesday following six straight defeats.

And despite an improved performance, they slipped to a seventh loss on the bounce to equal a club record for the most consecutive defeats in a single season.

Paul McShane was Reading’s hero as he poked home in the 85th minute after it had looked like they were going to squander the three points when Garath McCleary saw his earlier penalty saved by Lee Camp.

Millers boss Jackett said: “I felt the work rate, effort and commitment of the players was very good. We went toe-to-toe with Reading. We had a good number of chances and were a threat from set-pieces.

“There is enough of the season to get things going. I definitely feel I can keep them up.”

The Royals, who registered a first win in five, were grateful to goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi for keeping them in the game with a number of vital saves.

The Oman international kept out Joe Newell’s curling effort and Greg Halford’s header early on.

And it was Al-Habsi who kept them in it after the break too, when he stopped Richard Wood’s powerful header and Danny Ward’s one-on-one chance.

But after Dael Fry tripped Joey Van den Berg in the box, it was Millers keeper Camp who was the hero, stopping McCleary’s spot-kick with his legs.

The Royals piled the pressure on afterwards and the decisive moment came in the 86th minute when McShane was on hand to poke home at the far post after a Camp error.

Reading boss Jaap Stam said: “We created some very good chances in the second half, we should have scored more than one.”
