It’s not only about looking at what security we have in the home, but also the information we are choosing to share on our social media channels.

You don’t know who may be reading your updates and checking out when you are away from home.

You could be giving criminals a time frame for when they can burgle your house.

So let’s try to ensure that none of us become another crime statistic this year.

To help you do that I have collected some top tips from professionals which should keep your home and your valuables safe and secure this winter. Top Home Security Tips:

Keep doors locked both when you are at home and when you go out.

Avoid leaving a spare key beside the back door.

Always keep car keys and other valuables out of sight and well away from windows and doors.

Make sure your locks match the British Standard requirements.

Leave a light on – use a timer to turn on lamps inside the house. Draw your curtains at night. If you have a burglar alarm, use it! Don’t share snaps of holidays or nights out on social media until you return home. Never disclose expensive items of jewellery or other valuables when you are posting online. Do not share photos of the rooms in your house. And make sure all expensive items are removed from photos of the inside of your home before posting.
