McGoldrick keeps his head as McCarthy battlers stun Latics

-

A DAVID McGOLDRICK header two minutes from time sealed the three points for Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich.

Brett Pitman’s seventh-minute penalty put the Tractor Boys ahead, before a Yanic Wildschut brace looked like giving Wigan a first home win in three months.

But the Latics could not find the killer third goal and Pitman equalised midway through the second half after good work from McGoldrick.

And with Wigan pushing for a late winner they were caught on the break when McGoldrick headed in off the post, to the delight of the away fans behind the goal.

The home side got off to start when an unmarked Morrison headed home Whittingham’s corner in the third minute.

The Tykes were level in the 19th minute, though, top-scorer Winnall looping his header over helpless keeper Ben Amos.

And Barnsley went ahead in the 32nd minute following a clinical counter-attack.

A Cardiff corner was cleared and Ryan Kent sprinted down the left, his cross found Sam Morsy and his superb lay-off allowed Winnall to slot the to get his right hand to a Max Power free-kick that swerved viciously but Wildschut was on the spot to smash home from close range.

The Dutchman then beat three players to fire Wigan ahead.

But Ipswich were level with their first attempt of the second half, when Pitman again finished from close range.

And McGoldrick’s header completed the comeback for McCarthy’s side.
