Fletcher nicks win in daylight Rob-bery

-

STEVEN FLETCHER netted an injury-time penalty to break Rotherham hearts at Hillsborough.

The rock-bottom Millers looked set to earn just their second away point of the season as they defended doggedly until a game dominated by referee Tim Robinson was decided by the Scot’s last-gasp spot-kick.

Fletcher converted after Richard Wood, who was sent off, was adjudged to have bundled over Lucas Joao.

Chances were limited for both sides in a lifeless first half until Rotherham thought they had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time as Adeyemi headed in a Joe Newell free-kick, but it was harshly disallowed for a foul.

After the restart, Wednesday were denied an opener by some fine defending as Darnell Fisher superbly cleared off the line from Joao’s solo effort.

Keeper Lewis Price kept Wednesday at bay with a handful of saves as the Owls began to run out of ideas.

But they broke the deadlock with a moment of controversy as Fletcher won it from 12 yards four minutes into added time to lift the hosts into the top six.

Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal was pleased to get the job done. He said: “We are very happy with the score.

“It was not an easy game, it was a local derby and Rotherham had a lot to play for.

“The players had a very good attitude.

“We broke a wall that Rotherham put up and we don’t win a lot of those games, so I am very happy.”

Millers caretaker boss Warne was left scratching his head at the performance of the referee.

He said: “My honest opinion is the penalty is a penalty, there is contact from Woody on the player.

“But I don’t know how that is a sending-off, I am going to speak to him about that.

“For our disallowed goal, I’ve watched it numerous times and I cannot see where the foul is, I can’t even see where it might have been.

“To lose at such a late stage is a bitter pill to swallow, but I will still go home pretty proud.”
