ASHLEY Thomas will make it to church for what his family fear could be his final Christmas. Ashley, who is suffering from dementia, will be at the centre of a special festive episode this Tuesday. It will show the world through his eyes and uses special filming techniques to follow him as he wanders away from hospital before becoming lost and disorientated. John Middleton, who has played the vicar for more than 20 years, was persuaded to stay on in the role so the producers could delve deeper into his character’s devastating decline. The actor confirmed last year that the hard-hitting storyline would be his final one after he decided to quit the popular soap. John was due to record his final scenes this year but will now stay on until the spring. Soap bosses were determined to give Ashley’s family a Christmas they would all remember. It also features a happy surprise for the TV favourite. An insider said: “Ashley’s condition has rapidly deteriorated over the last few weeks and his wife Laurel is not holding out much hope on Christmas morning. “But Ashley has a kind of awakening because of the familiarity of the day.
