Jen in ‘kill yourself’ Shell shock

‘Music world weighed down by fat-shamers’

-

JENNIFER Hudson has hit out at “fat shaming” in the music business.

Her comments came as rival judge Sir Tom Jones sparked anger by commenting on 2012 winner Leanne Mitchell’s weight.

Jennifer said she was furious when music bosses told her to slim when she became famous. She told the Daily Star Sunday: “I’ve heard everything. I come from a place where you have to have tough skin. It was kind of shocking to me. Being a person who wasn’t always about image, I was ED GLEAVE walking into a world that was about nothing but image.

“I’d never realised how much the physical was such a priority. I come from Chicago where we’re just people. No one is put together by how they look.” Jennifer, pictured before losing around six stone after becoming a star, said she was shocked at how differently she was treated in Hollywood.

She said: “I’d never cared what people thought I looked like. It never occurred to me. And that’s probably the thing that irritates me the most…when people say ‘oh my God, you look great’. “I’m like ‘did you not hear what just came out of my mouth? Why are we talking about how I look?’.

“When I first got to Hollywood, I was like ‘wow’. Looks always matter, someone is always not going to be satisfied with how you look.

“Image is so important in the industry. It’s like I’m starting over. Now it’s like reintroducing myself to the world. I’m still the same person, but because the world perceive it from the way you look, it’s like ‘OK, I’ve got to start over’. You’re treated completely differently.” Jennifer signed up for The Voice because she loves how it focuses on vocals over looks.

She said: “I love the title of the show because that’s what it’s always been about for me. All I care about is singing and that’s the message that goes hand in hand with this moment.

“Music dictates my every emotion. And I find, even when we watch films, that’s what’s steering emotion.”
