could save yourself a packet over the year.

3. Close the windows: It creates less drag on the car and uses less fuel. Always keep them closed when you are driving at speed.

4. Remove the roof rack or ski box: This is just like leaving the windows open, but worse – even if the roof rack is empty.

5. Don’t haul around unnecessary weight: Just like your body, your car needs more fuel to move more weight, so get the rubbish out of the boot and the back seats. 6. Accelerate smoothly: Putting your foot down at the lights may save you a few seconds but it will soon add on the pounds at the pump.

7. Don’t push the accelerator down too far: I’m guilty of this one when I don’t want to change down a gear. Again, this burns fuel at a rapid rate and soon adds up over the weeks and months.

8. Turn the air-conditioning off: It’s tempting to leave the air-con on the whole year round. It stops the windows misting up in the winter and you don’t ever need to think about the temperature inside the car, but it uses quite a bit of fuel. I advise you to shut it off when it’s not hot.

9. Stick to the speed limit: They save lives and save you money, not just in fuel costs but motoring fines too.

10. Check your tyre pressures regularly: The lower the pressure, the more fuel the car needs to move down the road. Take five minutes every fortnight to check your rubber.
