IT’S ALL ABOUT ROO! Wayne’s landmark day

-

WAYNE ROONEY assured himself of legendary status at Manchester United by becoming the club’s joint-record scorer yesterday.

The United and England captain equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s total of 249 goals when he opened the scoring in the 4-0 FA Cup win against Reading.

And Rooney, 31, has achieved that total in 221 games fewer than Charlton.

He said: “It’s a proud moment for me, particularly to do it at such a massive club as Manchester United, which is such a huge part PAUL HETHERINGTON of my life. And it is a huge honour to be up there with Sir Bobby.

“Hopefully I’ll be out on my own with the record soon but I’m just going to enjoy today.

“When you first join a club you don’t look ahead to days like this or achievements like this.

“But now that it has happened, I’m pleased it has come here at Old Trafford in front of our home fans.

“We now have two more home games coming up in the next week and hopefully I can break the record in those matches.”

But Rooney added: “More important today is the result.

“It was a great performance with some good goals against a Reading side who tried to play in the right way and that was refreshing.”

Rooney has already beaten one Charlton record – his total for England.

And he is now set to take away his United mark too. ROO’S A BOBBY DAZZLER

See RESULT! P2-3
