Schneiderlin has respect for Roo

-

STEVE MILLAR MORGAN SCHNEIDERLIN has hit out at Wayne Rooney’s snipers and told them, ‘Get off his back’. Schneiderlin, now at Everton following his £24million switch, believes his former Manchester United team-mate should be hailed a legend instead of being slammed. Rooney (left) has taken stick despite going level with Sir Bobby Charlton as Manchester United’s leading goalscorer, with his critics saying he no longer merits a starring role at the club. But Schneiderlin says Rooney is not treated with the respect he deserves. He said: “Wayne just gets on with the job. He’s a legend. He’s a guy who everyone criticises when he has one or two bad games. But look at his stats. Look at what he’s done in his playing career – it’s just unbelievable. “You have to respect that. But, of course, stories are made up about him every time. “I know it hurts him because he wants to be recognised for what he does on the pitch. “And what he does on the pitch is just amazing. I hope he’s going to break this record very soon. He’s someone you are very lucky to have in England.”

But the former United captain, who played alongside the charismatic Cantona for four years, says the Old Trafford club have found one in Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The striker is so good that Aston Villa boss Bruce said: “The great players could play anywhere – Ibrahimovic could play on the moon!”

And Liverpool cannot be relishing facing a Cantona-esque character away from home today.

The maverick Frenchman was the scourge of the Anfield club during his United career, winning five of his eight matches against the Merseysiders and losing only one.

He scored against Liverpool on his return from an eight-month ban for his infamous kung-fu kick on Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons.

And Cantona, now 50 and an actor, says the highlight of his career was his volley against Liverpool at
