‘Golden nugget gnasher nearly finished me off’

-

EXCLUSIVE ISOBEL DICKINSON A DISABLED gran says she could have died choking on a gold tooth in a chicken nugget.

Gwenda Cheetham, a quadriplegic, claims it got stuck in her throat while she was being fed by her son.

David had picked up the dinner at a McDonald’s drive-thru last month.

He had left the room to make a cup of tea when he heard his mum gasping for breath.

David managed to help Gwenda, 76, cough up the nugget, which to their horror contained a gold capped tooth.

The full-time carer said McDonalds apologised and asked him to send the tooth to them in the post.

Housebound Gwenda, from Stockport, Cheshire, said: “I’m quadriplegic and can’t move.

“I could not lift my head to cough it up. I couldn’t breathe.

“Fortunately David heard me choking. He ran in, sat me up, hit me on the back and told me to spit it out.

“I thought I was going to die. It was very scary and very unpleasant. I thought ‘this is it, I’m going’.”

David, who looks after his mum full-time, said: “I’m not a drama queen but she might have choked to death.”

David contacted McDonalds but was left upset when they asked him to send in the tooth.

He said: “I got an email saying how sorry they were and that they would open an investigation.

“I sent photos of the tooth but they insisted that I sent it to them so they could test it. They sent a pre-paid envelope but I had to refuse as it was the only evidence I had.

“I probably go to that McDonald’s three times a month but this has put me off for life.”

McDonald’s said: “It is extremely unlikely this originated from our restaurant. We have asked Mr Cheetham to return the object to us, however he has refused.

“Without the object, we cannot investigate further and we would encourage Mr Cheetham to get in touch.”
