TONY STENSON against teams who finished between fifth and 12th. And for us this season it is very important that we do not drop points against them.

“We speak about Burnley and where they are in the league, it’s a game where we dropped points.

“Our mentality has changed. You analyse what happened last year and we are conscious that is one of the challenges this year.

“Someone told me last season at this point we had scored 37 goals, today we have scored 48. That’s a huge difference and that explains the difference.”

Arsenal fans have taken to Welbeck, 26, and Wenger added: “First of all, he’s hugely popular because he has done hugely well with England just before he got injured.

“He was the centre-forward of England – let’s not forget that – and then with England’s failure at the European Championship you cannot stop people thinking, ‘If Welbeck was there he would have helped us to win against Iceland’.

“Secondly, I believe he is a young, promising striker with great spirit and you don’t cheat people with that. He has pace, technique, is good in the air and wants to help the team. You could see that coming out before his injury. He has it all. When he was at Manchester United he did not score enough goals but suddenly he was stopped just at the wrong time.

“I think we will see more from him – touch wood. But he is not completely out of it. We rest him, one day, two days.

“He had bone inflammation and that takes huge time to recover and you have to be careful not to have a setback.

“Some players have big injuries and after a few months you think, ‘My friend, you are going to struggle’. “Some players come back and look like they have not been injured. He is one so we hold him back sometimes in training.”
