SUPER STEVEN PITCHES IN WITH A GOAL OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY

for Arfield who saw his shot deflected over the bar. James Tarkowski’s effort suffered a similar fate.

But City bounced back, creating danger of their own when Zak Vyner delivered a pin-point cross for Djuric who rose superbly but saw keeper Nick Pope save his header and the frontman just failed to untangle his feet to knock in the loose ball.

And two minutes later, on the stroke of half-time, Burnley made them suffer with a well-worked goal. Defour won the ball and embarked on a darting run before pulling the ball across for Vokes to tuck his shot into the bottom corner.

That was the 50th Burnley goal of the Welshman’s career.

It could have been even worse for City in the 51st minute when defender Aden Flint attempted a back-pass which squirmed away from keeper Fabian Giefer who saved his team-mate’s blushes by preventing a disastrous own-goal. And as Burnley stepped on the gas Defour let fly from 25 yards with a low shot which whistled past Giefer’s upright.

There was a glimmer of hope for City when Josh Brownhill’s free-kick almost caught out Pope in the 67th minute but he steadied himself to punch the ball clear.

Seconds later, play switched to the opposite end and Defour cleverly scooped over Giefer to bring the house down.

The volume was pumped up, too, when Vokes smacked an effort against the woodwork.

But City were not going to go out of the FA Cup without a fight and Brownhill launched a free-kick which Flint headed just wide of the post. Story of their day, really.
