The Old Trafford giants are through to the EFL Cup Final to meet Southampton at Wembley and today are at home to Wigan in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.

United, of course, are the FA Cup holders after Louis van Gaal led them to victory over Crystal Palace last May before he was replaced by Jose Mourinho.

But Jones, 24, has his eye on Champions League qualification and insists United have to think in terms of winning more than just one trophy.

The England defender said: “It’s not enough just to win a cup. We set our standards high and this club has a history of winning things.

“We are under no illusions that we have a given right to win things – but winning the FA Cup is not enough.

“We need to do more, we need to be involved in more finals and pushing for more trophies.

“Hopefully, we can pull together and keep going. We’ve put the EFL Cup to bed for now and we have to look forward to what will be a tough game against Wigan.”

Jones summed up the high standards he and United have by revealing he was “devastated” to lose at Hull last Thursday in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final. the Capital One Cup 4-0 away to MK Dons. Life would never be the same again for James.

But now, after a year out of the game with major ankle problems, the defender is on his way back to Old Trafford having joined Wigan on a three-year deal when his United career came to an end.

And he is delighted to be given the chance by boss Warren Joyce – the ex-United starmaker – to play a part in Wigan’s mouth-watering FA Cup tie on what was once the pair’s hallowed turf.

But James, 23 (right) can painfully turn back the clock to the time when he knew he had to leave and make a fresh start outside Old Trafford. He said: “I felt like I got a fair chance at United but MK Dons was the game that killed me. And I can only fault myself for that. I didn’t impress on that night. “Sometimes you have to admit whether Manchester United is where you are going to be in the future. You have got to understand yourself whether you are going to make that grade or not.

“Then all you can do is try and work your way back up somewhere to some sort of similar level.

“It will be a bit nerve-wracking. It’s my first game in 12 months but the match is more important than myself coming on.”
