New hitman sets the Toni for Adams’ men

ANTONI SARCEVIC ensured Plymouth took advantage of a rare slip-up by leaders Doncaster to move to within five points of the League Two leaders.

Rovers had not dropped a point in 2017 ahead of their home clash with Morecambe but they were left frustrated by the visitors as they shared a 1-1 draw.

Peter Murphy gave the visitors a first-half lead but John Marquis (below) levelled with more than half an hour remaining.

Derek Adams’ Plymouth went into their game at Cambridge smarting from a shock defeat by Yeovil and they got back on track with a 1-0 victory courtesy of Sarcevic’s first goal for the club just before the break.

Third-placed Carlisle came from behind to beat relegation-threatened Leyton Orient 2-1. Gary Liddle and Jamie Proctor, who was later sent off, scored the goals after Gavin Massey had given the hosts the lead.

Exeter remain in contention for an automatic promotion spot after Jordan Moore-Taylor and Lloyd James struck and David Wheeler added a double to secure a 4-0 triumph against Crewe.

missed a last-minute penalty through Marc Richards and they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Walsall. Kashket got the only goal as Wycombe leapfrogge­d Portsmouth in the play-off places, while Danny Hylton missed a stoppage-time penalty for fifth-placed Luton in a 1-1 draw at Grimsby, where the visitors’ Isaac Vassell cancelled out Chris Clements’ header.

Mansfield are just two points behind Portsmouth after a 2-0 win at Barnet as Ben Whiteman and Shaquile Coulthirst both got on the scoresheet.

Kurtis Guthrie cancelled out Jamille Matt’s close-range strike for Blackpool as play-off hopefuls Colchester earned a 1-1 draw. Goals from Harvey Rodgers and Noor Husin gave Accrington a crucial 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Notts County and two goals in the last 14 minutes from Matt Godden gave Stevenage a 2-1 win at Crawley.

Matt Dolan’s spot-kick cancelled out Padraig Amond’s opener as Yeovil earned a 1-1 draw at Hartlepool, while Jaanai Gordon’s stoppage-time goal stole a point for rock-bottom Newport against Cheltenham.
