OMore than a third of Brits (37%) have got multiple current accounts yet almost half of them say they only regularly use one.

With 49m people using current accounts in the UK, this means that about 8m accounts are sitting unused.

And with each of these accounts holding an average of £141, this adds up to £1.2bn of forgotten money.

One in five Brits admit they “can’t be bothered” to close their additional current accounts.

Nonetheles­s, it seems most people are unaware their cash could be working harder elsewhere.

More than 56% of Brits did not know whether their bank had cut interest rates in the past year, and 58% had no idea what the interest rate was on their current account.

When asked why they had more than one current account, almost a third said they had opened another account to take advantage of the different rewards that were being offered by banks.
