BRITS FACING CHILL FACTOR

Snow will lead to travel chaos

BRITAIN is set to shiver this spring as a polar plunge brings snow and travel chaos.

Winter officially draws to an end on Wednesday but forecasters have predicted two months of colder-than-average weather.

The Weather Company believes temperatures could drop as low as -8C (18F) with “forecast models indicating a cold risk across the UK at the beginning of March”.

Fellow forecasters the Met Office also warned they are expecting an icy snap ahead in midweek, with snow in the north. There could be freezing temperatures throughout the first half of next month. The south will be milder but the whole of the UK is expected to face washouts and gales, pushing 50mph in some parts of southern England tomorrow.

A Met Office forecaster said: “It will turn colder in the week with wintry showers in the north.

“The south could see temperatures a little above average.

“There is the possibility of a more prolonged cold spell, with an increased chance of snow.”

Consultant meteorologist Matt Hugo echoed the concerns as he believes cold polar air could spill south to chill Britain.

He said: “A Greenland air pressure block may make an appearance, with cold weather arriving from the north or north-east.”

March has hit between -7C and -18C in each of the past seven years, Met Office records show.

And the spring forecast means Brits face more road and rail disruption, after the six-day February Big Chill with -10C lows, as well as Storm Doris last week.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Spring could start on a wintry note, with a very cold and snowy spell during the first half of March.”
