Irish boys can deliver away-day joy at last

-

But the Liverpool boss will spend, spend, spend in the summer to get his hands on the real thing this time around in English football.

Klopp is a born winner with two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup chalked up on his successful CV in his homeland.

Now he has a steely-eyed obsession to bring back silverware to Anfield, whose new trophy cabinet in the recently opened main stand has places for plenty of gleaming additions.

Klopp is working on that right now with another three months of this current campaign still to run.

He said: “When I won the league in Germany, I could get a replica trophy. I don’t know how much it cost but it would have been quite expensive because it looks just like the original.

“I didn’t order it because I thought, ‘I don’t need this because I know we won it’. If I think about it, I still know now. I didn’t need to touch it and say, ‘Oh my God, that is how it feels’.

“I want to win lots of things in my life still and I am lucky I have won a lot of things already. But that is how it is and it doesn’t help my programme here.

“I am probably here because my teams have won a few things in the past and that is good.

“Now we work on winning things here. Winning more? Yes.”

Klopp has his plan and names of potential signings on his mind.

And once the curtain falls on this season, he is looking forward to raising it again to reveal a new, fresh and bigger squad for the next trophy battle.

He added: “Yes I have a plan but look it’s March. The plan is different things. It’s still the improvement of the players who are here. And it’s important that these players could improve.

“So that is one thing that I think is very important. Another thing, of course, are transfers. Are we looking for transfers? Yes. For players? Yes.

“Are we close to signing them? No, nothing to say about that but that’s how it is.

“It’s not that we say we want exactly four players or five players.

“But we know what we want and we are working really hard at the things we want which will work.

“We didn’t do the transfers last year to have a positive transfer record. But we are in a good situation so the base is really good to improve and of course we will spend money.

“When you look back, it looks like the squad wasn’t big enough at the start of the season.

“But back then, Danny Ings was involved in our plans and Daniel Sturridge was involved too.

“Plus, Ingsy could play on the wing like he’s done in former times. But Ingsy got STEPHEN WARD wants to leave Anfield this afternoon with Irish eyes smiling and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp cursing once more.

The German was furious following his side’s 2-0 defeat at Burnley in August when Liverpool had all the possession but came away with no points.

And Ireland ace Ward – along with his international team-mates Robbie Brady and Jeff Hendrick – is out to help the Clarets improve their dreadful away form with at least a point on Merseyside.

Boss Sean Dyche has seen his side collect only two points on their travels so far this campaign but Ward, who scored a winner at Anfield for Wolves in 2010, is hoping that he and his pals can change all that.

The left-back, 31, said: “The Irish are trying to take over.

“There are four of us with Kevin Long as well and it’s great. Robbie and Jeff are lads that I know well and they are good lads to have around the place.

“They were very sought after following the European Championships in France.

“They were arguably the shining lights for Ireland so to get them here and have them in our squad is a big plus. “To be fair, there’s a good team spirit with everyone here. “But after training the three of us get together quite a lot. I suppose the Irish flock towards the Irish.

“It’s nice to have the lads here but as I say we have got a great group of lads and I think it’s shown over the last couple of years.”

At Turf Moor in August Liverpool amassed a staggering 81 per cent possession and 26 shots on goal but lost the game 2-0 due to goals from Andre Gray and Sam Vokes.

Unfairly, Burnley came in for a bit of stick having won the game despite only seeing a tiny amount of the ball.

When asked if that had bothered the players, Ward said: “It didn’t annoy me.

“I was just absolutely delighted with the result to be honest – and the performance.

“I know most of our performance was defensively minded but I think we showed a different side to our game.

“We’re under no illusions. We don’t just have blind faith here.

“The main prize for us is to stay in the Premier League and I think there’s been a real belief and a hunger to make sure we do.”

Adding to their away haul of two points today would help.
