Mourinho: I’m staying

- STEVE MORGAN

JOSE MOURINHO yesterday insisted he will stay at Manchester United beyond his current deal.

The Old Trafford boss signed a three-year contract last summer when taking over from

Louis van Gaal. And ahead of today’s FA Cup Quarter-Final against Chelsea the Portuguese confirmed he would extend his deal.

Asked if he would like to boss the Red Devils beyond the length of his current contract, Mourinho said: “I would like to.

“I said the same when I came back to Chelsea.

“When I went back to Chelsea, I said I was going to stay until they wanted me to leave.

“I gave my word and I say the same in relation to Manchester United, with the plus that I am really happy and I really enjoy working here.

“I give my word – I am going to stay here for as long as the owners want.”

Mourinho says he is loving life in Manchester with the only problem being the high standard set by both himself and the club’s fans.

He added: “I work a lot but that’s what I like.

“I love the club and feel that I am here for much more time because the connection with people here is so good. The hard part is the expectation because of the history of the club.

“I am also a little bit guilty of it because I am used to winning trophies at every club.

“The relation between our true potential and the expectations we create – there is a gap.

“And that gap is the most difficult thing.

“We are happy with the trophy – the trophy is always important.

“The reality is that many other teams in England are going to finish the season without a trophy and we have one and a half – the EFL Cup and the Community Shield. So that’s good.

“We are also in the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup but we have to fight for everything.

“I don’t think the League Cup is enough for us to say, ‘It’s the end of February, the season is over’. It is not over.”

Speaking to the BBC’s Football Focus, Mourinho praised his former club Chelsea and their progress under new boss Antonio Conte.

He said: “I am not looking for revenge, I am not looking for anything wrong or bad.

“I’m not surprised how well Chelsea have done this season. I’m surprised with the way they play. “I think Chelsea are phenomenal. “They are very good defensively and can kill teams with three

or four players.”
