VICIOUS offenders who torture and kill animals regularly go on to commit horrific crimes against people.

A study by the Ministry of Justice has revealed that some of the UK’s most notorious fiends had a history of cruelty to animals.

They include Dunblane monster Thomas Hamilton, Moors murderer Ian Brady, gunman Raoul Moat and James Bulger’s killers Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.

The MoJ statistics show that in the last 10 years, 16 convicted murderers, 27 child rapists and 97 convicted of child cruelty had all been previously convicted or cautioned for animal cruelty offences.

Experts believe that the animal crimes de-sensitise the sickos to the cruelty and pain their attacks on humans cause. Mimi Bekhechi, of the animal charity PETA, said: “We cannot see cruelty to animals as separate from violence against humans.

“Because animals cannot report abuse themselves, are unable to speak out and are vulnerable, they’re easy targets and often become ‘practice’ victims for people who later move on to harming humans.”

Hamilton, who killed 16 children and a teacher in the 1996 Dunblane gun rampage, squashed the heads of live rabbits under the wheels of his car.

Brady, who tortured and slaughtered five children, boasted he killed his first cat aged just 10.

He also admitted burning a cat alive, stoning dogs and cutting the heads off rabbits.

Child killers Thompson and Venables shot pigeons with air rifles and tied rabbits to railway lines to watch them get run over.

Moat, who shot three people during a gun rampage in the NorthEast in 2010, killed his friend’s cat and also battered a dog and left it to die.

Ms Bekhechi added: “The UK’s HOLLYWOOD studios are in a race to secure rights to a major movie on the life of rock ’n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry.

The guitar hero, whose classic hits like Johnny B. Goode, blazed a music trail for countless modern stars, died from “natural causes” last weekend at his home in Wentzville, Missouri, aged 90.

Chuck formed his first band in the mid-1940s, when he was 20 and serving time behind bars in a juvenile detention centre for armed robbery. most notorious violent criminals are all known to have tortured animals before moving on to attacking humans.

“PETA has compiled a detailed report regarding the well-established link between cruelty to animals and violent crimes against humans.

“We send it to police forces and schools to highlight the importance of treating cases of animal abuse with the utmost seriousness – for the safety of both animals and humans. History has shown us what happens when we don’t.” And executives at Fox, Paramount and Warner Bros are all reportedly preparing bids for a big-budget biopic.

Pulp Fiction star Samuel L Jackson, 68, is the hot favourite to play him on screen, with a younger actor to portray the legend’s earlier years. The music maverick’s posthumous estate will be further boosted by the release of Chuck in June – his first studio album in almost 40 years, which was finished weeks before he passed away.
