CHEWBARKA Dumped terrier looked like Star Wars character

-

POORLY pup Mel was so badly neglected she looked like Chewbacca when rescuers found her.

The Yorkshire Terrier was covered in matted fur just like the Star Wars hero.

Now volunteers are looking for her “fur-ever” home after CATHERINE REID nursing her back to health. Mel was one of two terriers – the other nicknamed Sue – left at Elvaston Castle, Derbys.

It took four hours to trim Mel’s coat which was so thick it covered her eyes.

Karen Gregory, owner of Crowfoot Kennels Dog Rescue, said: “She was in a bad state and looked like Chewbacca – her hair was like dreadlocks.”

Karen, 49, said Mel was “terrified at first” but soon became a different dog.

She said: “We spent all afternoon clipping and bathing her so she was more comfortable.

“After we clipped her hair back she was running around wagging her tail.”

It one of the worst rescue cases Karen has seen.

The call about the second dog at the same spot came in just hours after Mel’s rescue.

The pets are believed to have been left by the same person but it is not yet known whether they are related. Karen said: “Sue’s teeth were so bad she had to have most of them removed.

“They were so rotten they could have poisoned her.”

Vets’ bills for the pair have topped £600.

Karen, who hopes to rehome them as a pair, told us: “It’s unbelievable that someone has let them get in that state.”
