Fired-up Ryan is all ready two roar
PAUL HETHERINGTON RYAN BERTRAND revealed yesterday that he goes into today’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania inspired by TWO England coaches – Gareth Southgate and Eddie Jones.
The Southampton left-back admitted he was massively influenced by Jones, England’s rugby union coach, when he spent time with the country’s footballers last week.
Bertrand said: “I took massive inspiration from the meeting with Eddie.
“His team have just been on a fantastic, record-breaking run. So we dug deep to find out how that sustainable success had been achieved.
“It was eye-opening. For me personally, I took from the meeting how sure and how confident he was.
“His message was that if you work hard, then you will get success.”
But Bertrand also said of Three Lions boss Southgate: “He has massive qualities too and has been a real breath of fresh air.
“He has given us a mantle to express ourselves. And in terms of preparation, no stone has been left unturned.
“He has created a perfect stage for us to go out and perform. We are creating a new culture.”
The defender, who is set to win his 12th England cap, added: “It is about being the best we can be and we want to achieve something for the whole country.
“In the end, it’s the players that lead and taking responsibility on the pitch is something that also came across in our meeting with Eddie.” Bertrand (below) has another opportunity today to establish himself in the England side, with injured Spurs left-back Danny Rose missing the Wembley clash. But the Southampton star said: “We have got great depth in all positions throughout the squad.
“And you just can’t get caught up in your own personal situation.”
