RESULT! Sergi’s the man who Can as Bees buzzing

-

BOSS Dean Smith says Brentford will not take their foot off the pedal as they build for their fourth straight season in the Championship.

The Bees head coach described some of his side’s football in a scintillating first half as “terrific” as they stormed to a 2-0 lead over Bristol City through Sergi Canos and Lasse Vibe.

But the second half – after a first 45 City boss Lee Johnson said he “didn’t see coming” – was a different story as City made the Londoners sweat as the scoreline stayed the same.

Smith said: “Our performance for 70 minutes was very good. We switched the play, played with pace and were very expansive, and some of the football was terrific.

“But we lost Sergi and Maxime Colin with calf injuries and then a few cramped up and in the last 20 minutes we got sloppy.”

Despite second-tier football being guaranteed for next season, Smith wants his young side to start preparing for the next campaign now.

“We want to keep winning games and playing good football because we have half an eye on planning for next season,” he said.

“That means another good performance against Leeds on Tuesday but we may have to see who has recovered in time.”

Opposite number Johnson said: “In the second half we created more but we didn’t start anywhere near well enough, and that’s disappointing.

“We simply can’t start like that and expect to go and win games.”

City, who were unbeaten in their last four, are now just one place and one point off the relegation zone after Brentford eased to a comfortable double.

“The way we’ve been playing I just didn’t see this coming,” he added.
