out of this horrible predicament that he’s in. He’s an incredibly talented actor. Q: What was it like working with Marion Cotillard? A: She’s a fantastic performer. Her performance in La Vie En Rose is one of the ten best performances I’ve ever seen on film.
Some actors have to work their socks off to get an audience on their side. And then other people, they just have the audience in the palm of their hand right from the very start.
Both of them have that. You feel immediate empathy and sympathy towards them. I was really excited to be on the same side of the camera as them, even for a few scenes. Q: And the director? A: I mean, the guy has just made amazing movies, really, really smart, entertaining films – the best treatment of time travel on film ever. And these sets are fun to be on. You can see what people are able to do if they are given the resources.
And yet, you still only get three takes and you’re on your way! Q: Is that unusual? A: Normally it’s pretty rare that you do more than that – that’s ’cos I nail it the first time (laughs)!
But he knows exactly what he wants in terms of the framing, the pace of it and how it connects to the scene before and the scene after. With him, there’s not a lot of covering shots, which is really unusual. You’re just shooting what he needs. Normally, directors are not allowed to do that anymore.
