ED’S TIP: David will have the edge over his rivals. STARS will tonight battle it out for the most prestigiou­s prizes on the box. The BAFTA TV Awards is undoubtedl­y one of the glitziest events of the year. But behind the showbiz smiles on the red carpet there will be fierce competitio­n among our biggest names. Graham Norton, Sarah Lancashire, Benedict Cumberbatc­h and Michael McIntyre are all nominated for the honours. And shows in the running include the gritty drama National Treasure and critically acclaimed US series The Night Of. Sue Perkins will be on hosting duties at the Royal Festival Hall in central London and you can follow the action on BBC One. The TV BAFTAs were first handed out in 1955 and can boost the profile of a star or a series more than any other award. Industry experts say television is enjoying a golden age – meaning the competitio­n will be even tougher this year. One star who will definitely be going home happy is Joanna Lumley. Known to fans for Absolutely Fabulous and The New Avengers, she will tonight be honoured with a Fellowship. She joins a raft of huge names including Michael Palin and Sir David Attenborou­gh. After the news was announced by BAFTA chiefs, a thrilled Joanna said: “Nothing could make me prouder or happier than being awarded this phenomenal honour. “To be counted among the greatest talents and stars of our industry is an awesome gift. “The BAFTA Fellowship is the grandest and most unexpected prize I have ever had the joy of receiving.” More than 20 awards will be up for grabs tonight.
