Doesn’t get a BAFTA – find out why in our great guide

-

DRAMAS are the most talked about shows these days, so this is by far the most hotly contested category. Period epics The Crown and War and Peace are nominated alongside The Durrells and Happy Valley. LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Wolf Hall. ED’S TIP: It is an absolute travesty the third series of Line of Duty wasn’t nominated for this award. My tip for victory out of those in the running is Happy Valley. SARAH Lancashire’s emotive and steely turn in Happy Valley helped to make its second run one of the best drama series in recent years. She is up against Claire Foy from Netflix drama The Crown, Jodie Comer for Thirteen and Nikki Amuka-Bird for NW. LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Suranne Jones. ED’S TIP: Sarah had millions of us on the edge of our seats so she surely has to win. THANKS to streaming services like Netflix and NOW TV we can watch shows from around the world at the click of a button, so plenty of us have been hooked on the programmes up for this one: Stranger Things, American Crime Story – The People v OJ Simpson, The Night Of and Transparent. LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Transparent. ED’S TIP: The Night Of was one of the best dramas in years and deserves to win hands down. If it doesn’t, it will be an injustice worse than any on the show. MURDER mystery The Witness for the Prosecution thrilled us at Christmas and now it’s up alongside National Treasure, The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses and The Secret.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: This is England ’90

ED’S TIP: National Treasure had outstanding performances, a gripping plot and topical subject matter. I’d be surprised if it didn’t win this one. VIEWERS can’t get enough of seeing heartwarming, funny and downright awkward moments on First Dates. The show is up again this year, facing a challenge from Muslims Like Us, The Real Marigold Hotel and The Secret Life of Five Year Olds.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: First Dates.

ED’S TIP: First Dates deserves to get it again this year and probably will. SATURDAY night’s biggest shows will battle for this award: Britain’s Got Talent, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Michael McIntyre’s Big Show and Strictly Come Dancing.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Strictly Come Dancing.

ED’S TIP: All four shows offer fantastic family entertainment, but I think Strictly, right, will waltz away with the prize at the Royal Festival Hall. THE Great British Bake Off’s final series on the BBC was our most-watched show last year. Now it is in the running for the big prize, up against The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs, Travel Man: 48 Hours In... and Who Do You Think You Are? LAST YEAR’S WINNER: The Great British Bake Off. ED’S TIP: Bake Off, above, stormed to victory last time around and I reckon it will do the same this year. THE Last Leg has become one of Channel 4’s biggest shows and could be a winner tonight. It’s up against Charlie Brooker’s 2016 Wipe, Cunk on Shakespeare and Taskmaster.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Have I Got News For You.

ED’S TIP: Charlie Brooker deserves to win – his annual Wipe shows are always a big television highlight. THE moving Damilola, Our Loved Boy impressed viewers and critics. It is in the running alongside NW, Aberfan: The Green Hollow and Murdered by My Father.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Don’t Take My Baby.

ED’S TIP: My money is on Damilola, Our Loved Boy, left, tonight. BRITISH comedy doesn’t produce many hits these days, so it is no surprise the little known Flowers, People Just Do Nothing and Camping have landed nominations. Fleabag is also up.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: Peter Kay’s Car Share.

ED’S TIP: The team behind Fleabag may as well ask for their prize right now – it’s the only one of the four shows to have made any real impact.
