OUR EXPERTS GIVE THEIR VERDICT ON A SUPERB 2016-17 CAMPAIGN HARRY PRATT
GAME OF THE SEASON Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool. A classic opening weekend showdown set the ball rolling for some crazy high-scoring Premier League clashes – and ultimately proved crucial in Liverpool finishing fourth ahead of Arsenal. A goal up after 30 minutes, the Gunners were 4-1 down on the hour mark before a late rally. MOMENT OF THE SEASON Stoke’s Austrian ace Marko Arnautovic hammers a penalty high into the stands at Swansea, who then break to make it 2-0. What a vital few seconds in their great escape. GOAL OF THE SEASON Andy Carroll’s overhead rocket for West Ham against Crystal Palace at the London Stadium was breathtaking. Nothing lucky about it as he leapt acrobatically to fire in an unstoppable peach. BEST SIGNING OF THE SEASON N’Golo Kante (Chelsea): Some bemoan the £32m Frenchman being FWA and PFA Player of the Year because he is a holding midfielder. Rubbish. The ex-Leicester ace is wonderfully gifted all over the park. WORST SIGNING OF SEASON Jordon Ibe (Bournemouth): The £15m club-record buy from Liverpool (right) was conspicuous by his absence almost all season. Not value for money. QUOTE OF THE SEASON “The psychological environment for the players was absolutely horrendous. Certainly, my personal situation has contributed.” Arsene Wenger ends months of denial about his contract stalemate. PLAYER TO WATCH 2017-18 Rob Holding (Arsenal): The ex-Bolton central defender, 21, shone in the final weeks of the campaign. Tough yet composed, he appears to have a bright future.
