BRADY GUNNS FOR CRITICS AS WENG SAYS ABUSE IS ‘A DISGRACE’

- by GARRY DOYLE

ARSENAL legend Liam Brady reckons Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is getting a raw deal from the club’s fans.

“Wenger Out” chants have provided the soundtrack to yet another season at The Emirates but Brady (right) who worked with the Frenchman for nearly two decades, is disgusted by the treatment his former boss is getting.

The Irishman, 61, who lit up Highbury during a glittering career with the club from 1973 to 1980, returned to Arsenal in 1996 and was director of the Arsenal Youth Academy until 2014, working in tandem with Wenger. So it’s no surprise he supports the under-fire Frenchman.

Brady said: “Did you hear what Sir Alex had to say about Arsene? How he has kept his dignity amid the criticism, how he has shown outstanding qualities handling the whole situation. The key thing for me was when Alex talked about long-termism and stability. I totally agree with that.

“Arsene has done a tremendous job over such a long period of time. He has worked tirelessly and smartly for the club.

“Arsene has kept Arsenal competitive. This is their third FA Cup Final in four years.

“They were in the Champions League for 20 consecutive years and I don’t agree

that missing out on it for one year merits criticism. The number of points they got this season exceeded what they got last year. But last year they finished second.”

Wenger (left) described the criticism he has faced at Arsenal this season as “a disgrace” he will “never forget”.

The Frenchman, 67, has faced fierce protests from fans calling for him to leave the club he has led since 1996.

“I don’t mind criticism because we are in a public job,” he told BBC Sport’s Football Focus before yesterday’s FA Cup Final against Chelsea at Wembley.

“I believe there’s a difference between being criticised and being treated in a way that human beings don’t deserve.”

He added: “The lack of respect from some has been a disgrace and I will never accept that. I will never forget it.

“The behaviour of some people during the season, that is what hurts me most. It’s not my person that is hurt but the impeccable image of the club around the world. That kind of behaviour does not reflect what Arsenal is.

“A strong club is a club that makes a decision. It is wrong that in modern society it is not a question of whether a decision is right but whether it is popular.

“That has nothing to do with competence. People with responsibility have to make the right decision.”
