Di tapes chart ‘lies & deceit’
PRINCESS Diana said in secret tapes she felt like a “sacrificial lamb” which Prince Charles obsessed over, writes WILL STONE.
The astonishing audio, which lays bare the “lies and deceit” in her 1981 marriage, has been released for the first time.
In a series of recordings, Diana documented her relationship with Charles.
On condition that her involvement was kept secret, the results were sent to author Andrew Morton, who published them in Diana: Her True Story.
It is being republished with transcripts of the original tapes.
In one section, the princess said: “The first thing that hit me was my (future) husband sending Camilla Parker Bowles flowers when she had meningitis: ‘To Gladys from Fred’ (their nicknames for each other).
“I never dealt with that side of things. I just said to him: ‘You must always be honest with me’.”
In another, Diana revealed how she thought Charles perceived her: “He’d found the virgin, the sacrificial lamb, and in a way he was obsessed with me.”
She also admitted having a “filthy row” with Charles after overhearing him tell Camilla Parker Bowles on the phone, “Whatever happens, I will always love you.”
And she described Buckingham Palace as a place of “dead energy” where she felt lonely.
Diana talked of discovering Charles had had a bracelet made for Camilla with G and F (Gladys and Fred) entwined in it, just before their wedding.
“He took the bracelet, lunchtime on Monday. We got married on the Wednesday.
“So rage, rage, rage! But, no, Charles cut me absolutely dead. It’s as if he had made his decision; and if it wasn’t going to work, it wasn’t going to work.”
The princess confided to her sisters: “I can’t marry him. I can’t do this.”
She added: “They were wonderful and said, ‘Well, bad luck, your face is on the tea towels so you’re too late to chicken out’.”
