A club spokesman said: “Contrary to some reports, a shortlist of candidates for the vacant manager’s position at Preston North End is yet to be put together.
“A large number of applications have been received, which are being fully assessed over the weekend.
“Following on from this process a full interview schedule will be assembled and no interviews are planned for over the weekend. JACK STEPHENS has signed a new five-year deal at Southampton.
The defender, 23, impressed after nailing down a first-team place following Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending injury in January.
England Under-21s international Stephens, who has been with Southampton since he was 17, is highly rated by the club.

“His progression, and the level of his performances, was one of the real highlights of last season and we have been delighted with his development ever since he joined the club.” Stephens (below) said: “It feels like home to me. I have really enjoyed my time here and am looking forward to the next five years.” Southampton also announced Sam Gallagher has signed a new four-year contract. The striker, 21, spent last season on loan at Blackburn and made an impression with 12 goals despite Rovers’ relegation from the Championship. Gallagher said: “This contract shows the belief the club have in me and I need to prove that now.”
