No point in picking pal Klopp’s brain insists Wagner

- Gary Carter Reporting

DAVID WAGNER insists he will not tap up best mate Jurgen Klopp for advice on the Premier League – because there is no point. The German is ready to lead Huddersfield into the top flight for the first time in 45 years and will face his big pal in battle when they take on Liverpool. But other than a fleeting mention, there will be no in- depth discussions about what life at English football’s top table will be like. Wagner knows that what Huddersfield will go through is completely different to what goes on at Anfield. He said: “The clubs are not comparable, so there is not the possibility that he can give me a lot of advice or I can give him a lot of advice. “We’ll speak about the experience he has had in games against Team X and I will tell him about my experience when we play Team Z. “But this will be the only help we can give each other. These are two totally different clubs.” Town have twice broken their club transfer record in the close season – first signing Manchester City’s Aaron Mooy, 26, for £8million and then forking out £11m for Montpellier striker Steve Mounie, 22. Wagner has also tied up a £7m switch for Derby’s Tom Ince, 25, a loan return for Chelsea’s Kasey Palmer, 20, and has held talks over Inter Milan’s Andrea Ranocchia, 29.

But after signing a new two-year deal despite offers from England and Europe, the Town boss is adamant Huddersfield will not go mad in the transfer market, with chairman Dean Hoyle insisting they will do it in a ‘Yorkshire way’.

Wagner added: “The biggest key for me staying was what we’ve done the last 18 months and what’s in front of us.

“We started the journey and we’re still on it. We’ve opened a new chapter for this football club – it’s one of the most exciting moments for the club and I really wanted to be part of it.

“I thought about what is the next step for the club. I have spoken to Dean and we more or less had the same thing in our heads.

“We are still very humble and we will do it in the Yorkshire way but we are ambitious, we will try to keep the atmosphere we have in this town.

“There are no real assurances in football. It’s a game based on results. It’s a game based on working attitude and doing everything to be successful.

“We know we are not competitive in terms of money with the other 19 clubs but we have to find other ways to be competitive.”
